Gobi

Gobi Desert

Mongolia's great south — red sandstone cliffs, singing dunes, dinosaur fossils and Bactrian camels at sunrise.

About Gobi Desert

The Gobi is not the sea of sand most people imagine — it is a vast, dry expanse of rocky steppe, deep canyons, ice-filled gorges and only occasional dunes. Larger than many countries, it shelters wild Bactrian camels, snow leopards (rarely seen), Asiatic wild ass and the Gobi bear.

The classic Gobi loop covers the Khongoryn Els (the famous "singing" dunes, 180 km long and up to 300 m tall), Yolyn Am (an ice-filled canyon in the Gurvan Saikhan mountains), and Bayanzag — the Flaming Cliffs where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs in 1923.

Days are hot, nights drop sharply, and the silence is absolute.
