Eastern Steppe

The Eastern Steppe is the largest intact temperate grassland left on Earth. Mongolian gazelles migrate across it in herds of up to a million — one of the planet's last great mammal migrations.

This is also where Temüjin was born in 1162 — the boy who would become Chinggis Khaan. The Khentii mountains, the Onon and Kherlen rivers, and the sacred Burkhan Khaldun peak form the heart of the Khaan's homeland.

Gün-Galuut Nature Reserve, only 130 km from Ulaanbaatar, is a window onto this landscape — wetlands, rare cranes, Argali wild sheep, and wide-open quiet.
