Mongolia is famous for being extreme. Summer is gloriously warm; winter is famously cold. But each season is also a different country — and the right time to visit depends entirely on what you want to see.
Summer (June–August)
The classic season. Green steppe, blue skies, Naadam Festival (July 11–13). This is when most travelers visit, and for good reason.
Autumn (September–October)
Golden landscapes, fewer travelers, the Golden Eagle Festival in October. Many guides consider this the best time to travel.
Winter (November–March)
For the brave. Genuine sub-zero adventure: ice festival, eagle hunting, true nomadic winter life. Unforgettable, but you need proper gear.
Spring (April–May)
The least-visited season. Baby animals everywhere, the steppe turning green, almost no tourists. A photographer's dream.
